A Chinese Out-of-control rocket is falling back to Earth — and Just missed New York

The US Department of Defence has said it's tracking the Chinese rocket that's out of control and set to re-enter Earth's atmosphere.

The US Department of Defense has said it's tracking the Chinese Long March 5B-rocket that's out of control and set to re-enter Earth's atmosphere this weekend.

The core of the Chinese Long March 5B rocket carried the "core module" of the country's space platform into low Earth orbit last week.

But then the mission was complete, the rocket appears to possess fallen into an orbit that would see it plunge towards the world.

It is not clear how the 30-meter-tall rocket will fall, and where exactly it'll land. Since 1990, nothing weighing more than 10 tonnes has fallen back to Earth uncontrolled – and therefore the Chinese rocket is assumed to weigh about 10 tonnes.

The Chinese rocket is predicted to enter Earth's atmosphere around May 8 and US Space Command is tracking the rocket's trajectory amid concerns about where its debris may make an impression, CNN reported.

"US Space Command is conscious of and tracking the situation of the Chinese Long March 5B in space, but its exact entry point into the Earth's atmosphere can't be pinpointed until within hours of its re-entry, which is predicted around May 8," Pentagon's US Space Command said during a statement.

The roughly 100-foot object is orbiting Earth every 90 minutes and zippers past north of New York, Beijing and as far south as New Zealand, Fox News reported citing an area monitoring website.

The report said that despite the threat, it's presumably to splash in one among the world's oceans or in an isolated area. "I don't think people should take precautions. the danger that there'll be some damage or that it might hit someone is pretty small -- not negligible, it could happen -- but the danger that it'll hit you is incredibly tiny. then i might not lose one second of stay over this on a private threat basis," Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Astrophysics Center at Harvard University, told CNN.

This comes a time when several experts within the West have raised concerns about the clandestine ambitions behind the development of the Chinese station and the triggering of a replacement 'space race'.

Last year, parts of 1 of an equivalent rockets fell right down to Earth, during a situation with marked similarities to the present one.

Most of the pieces landed within the Atlantic. But pieces of debris were reported in Ivory Coast, and experts calculated that it had missed New York by minutes.
